Can You Lose Weight on Your Own?

This question comes up a lot. The truth is, it can depend. For some people, sticking to a plan and being disciplined comes easy. For others, it can be a challenge. Look at other aspects of your life to figure this out. Take stock of your strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you’re a person who thrives on routine, you might find that following a weight loss plan will be easier to adapt to. If you lead a very unstructured lifestyle, this might make following a plan more difficult. Either way you will need to find whatever will motivate you to stick to it.

There is no doubt that support of some type can help you succeed. But losing weight on your own might not really be ‘on your own’. You can log your progress in an online community. This option may offer you just enough support and encouragement, without actually joining a program. You may also find a support network in friends and/or family members.

If joining a program is the right choice for you (online or in person), remember that with or without support, YOU are the one putting in the effort to lose the weight.

This is usually the time of year when people struggle the most with their weight loss goals. Get a head start and don’t wait to make it a new year’s resolution!
